The next time you are in the area or catching a show at Opera House, drop in for a bite at ‘Shree Ram Boarding House

LIFESTYLE

Nestled off the road in Girgaum is Shree Ram Boarding House – a misnomer if there ever was one – because there is certainly no boarding available here, but you will get some of the most authentic Malwani cuisine at the most reasonable rates in South Mumbai.

Don’t be fooled by the shabby building entrance, a sad consequence of an abrasive landlord, inside the interiors are impeccable with high standards of cleanliness maintained.

A well-trained staff is there to cater to your gastronomic needs.

Popularly known as SRB to its regulars, the restaurant has been in existence, serving up its tasty fare since 1959.

Around 2012, it went into new management, and now its handled by one of the majority partners – Hemavand Namdarian, a true blue Irani Zoroastrian.

He is a third-generation baker, his grandfather having established Shahpur bakery at Tardeo.

Having done his hotel management from IHM, Mumbai, Hemavand has been expanding the family business, from bakery to restaurants was just a natural progression and today, SRB also has another branch at Byculla, just before Gloria Church.

The one thing SRB prides itself on, and what the clients swear by, is the quality of fish, which is above par.

The head chef himself goes to the docks early morning to source it.

Besides, the authentic Malwani flavour comes from the masala which is sourced all the way from Malwan village in Sindhudurg district.

Hemavand is completely hands on and most afternoons you will find him interacting with the patrons and even lending a hand in the kitchen.

The Kombdi Vade is another Malwani staple that no one should leave without tasting.

Vegetarians, don’t despair, as the extensive menu has you covered as well – with Malwan mix vegetables, and Malwanii paneer burji being some of the more in-demand dishes.

Their ‘bombil’ thali is a specialty and the shark (mori) and shellfish (tisriya) make for an interesting change from the regular menu of some restaurants.

Though the food tends to be a tad spicy, there’s nothing like a refreshing ‘sol kadi’ to wash it down, which is one of the best in the city.

For those who like their beer and booze; the bar is well stocked and again at very reasonable rates.

The menu is extensive, even venturing into Chinese starters – at popular demand we are told.

The only disappointment is the dessert section which has just caramel custard as an option.

Though, honestly, after gorging on the fish, there isn’t really much scope for dessert!

So next time you are in the area or catching a show at Opera House, drop in for a bite, a typical meal will cost about Rs 1000 for two without drinks.
