Sharda Care Healthcity Saves 20-Year-Old After Severe Brain Injury

Sharda Care Healthcity, a leading tertiary care facility in Greater Noida, successfully treated 20-year-old Mr. Kartikya Srivastava, who was brought in a deeply comatose state after initial stabilisation at another hospital following a high-impact motorcycle accident in [Location of Accident]. In addition to severe brain injury, his condition was complicated by a lung infection, life-threatening sepsis, and a rare but deadly blood clotting disorder known as Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). Without immediate hospitalisation and advanced trauma care, he risked irreversible brain damage or death due to excessive bleeding and organ failure. TheNeurosurgery team led by Dr. Ravindra Srivastava, Mch AIIMS ND ,Chairman of Neuro and Spine Surgery, delivered intensive treatment to control brain pressure, reduce swelling, and prevent secondary brain insults . With road accidents claiming over 1.5 lakh lives annually in India, this case underscores how timely intervention at a fully equipped trauma centre and neurosurgery excellence can mean the difference between life and death—especially when multiple organ systems are at risk.
Mr. Srivastava’s injuries were extremely complex. The accident caused a Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)—GRADE 3 , a serious brain injury where the connecting fibres in the brain are torn due to shearing and stretching of axons often leading to coma. Initial CT scan revealed severe brain swelling, and a later MRI confirmed DAI Grade 3 along with cerebral edema worsening his condition. Because he could not breathe on his own, doctors placed him on a ventilator for over several weeks and later performed a tracheostomy (a small opening in the windpipe) to help him breathe. While in intensive care, he developed a severe lung infection that spread into the bloodstream, causing sepsis—a life-threatening reaction that can lead to organ failure. This triggered Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC), a dangerous condition where abnormal clotting and bleeding happen at the same time, putting him at high risk of uncontrolled bleeding and further complications.
Dr. Ravindra Srivastava, Senior Consultant – Neurosurgery and HOD , Sharda Care Healthcity, said,
“This was an extremely critical case from the outset. The patient had a severe Diffuse Axonal Injury Gr-3, affecting the brain’s vital centres for consciousness, complicated by lung infection, sepsis, and a life-threatening clotting disorder, where survival rates can be very low. His survival and complete neurological recovery are a direct result of rapid intervention, continuous neuro-monitoring, and coordinated multidisciplinary care. For over 2 months, the Neurosurgery team led by Dr. Ravindra Srivastava , the overall management of brain trauma, while the Critical Care Medicine team led by Dr Anil ,ensured life support and stabilisation. Pulmonology treated the lung infection, and Infectious Disease specialists-controlled sepsis and Hematology managed the clotting disorder, while Physiotherapy, Dietetics, and 24/7 skilled nursing care supported rehabilitation and recovery. This integrated, round-the-clock approach was crucial in bringing him back to life.”
Dr Ravindra added, “Unfortunately, we are witnessing a steady rise in severe road accident cases. Many arrive in a critical state, and some do not survive despite the best efforts, leaving families devastated both emotionally and financially. Road safety measures—such as wearing helmets, following speed limits, and adhering to traffic rules—are not just guidelines, they are lifesaving actions. Preventing such tragedies is far better than treating them, and avoiding a single accident can spare a family the trauma of losing a loved one.”
Mr. Rishabh Gupta, Vice President, Sharda Care Healthcity, said: “This case is a powerful example of how timely intervention, advanced critical care infrastructure, and coordinated teamwork can save even the most critically injured patients. At Sharda Care Healthcity, we have one of the country’s largest Level 1 Emergency Care units, fully equipped to manage complex medical emergencies with speed and precision, drawing patients from across India. From high-risk surgeries to everyday treatments, every service we offer is guided by innovation and a patient-first approach.”
Expressing their gratitude, patient’s family said, “When we saw him in that condition after the accident, we feared the worst, as many doctors told us that he would be unconscious for many months ,but when Dr Ravindra Srivastava arrived in causality despite being Sunday that day ,he gave full assurrance and confidence that your child is in safe and experienced hands and should not worry. I would say Shardacare is fortunate to have such highly qualified and experienced doctors from AIIMS New Delhi. The doctors especially Dr. Ravindra srivastava, nurses, and staff at Sharda Care Healthcity gave us hope at every step. Their dedication, expertise, and constant care brought our son back to life. We will forever be thankful especially to Dr Ravindra Srivastava for picking up phone at 1 am in night and managing the DIC and fever with his entire team for giving us our son back, healthy and smiling. He has given another life to my son Kartik and he is a God for me.
