
Dr Manjusha Giri, defeated her nearest rival noted ENT Surgeon Dr Prashant Nikhade by a margin of 1,230 votes at the IMA Maharashtra Elections.
Of the total 12,408 polled votes, Dr Giri secured 6,783 votes while Dr Nikhade could garner 5,553 votes. The voting was held from August 17 to September 7, 2025 at various branches in Maharashtra. The counting ended during the wee hours of Monday and result was declared at around 1 am. Dr Giri, a renowned Developmental Paediatrician and Director of Neuron Brain Spine and Critical Care Centre.
History has been created in the medical fraternity of Maharashtra. Dr Manjusha Pramod Giri (Sakala) won the prestigious election of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Maharashtra State Branch, by a significant margin, becoming the first-ever woman President in the history of IMA Maharashtra.
This landmark victory is not only a personal milestone but also a moment of pride for Nagpur, which has given the State its first female leader in the Association’s long journey.

Nagpur, brings with her vast medical expertise, administrative experience, and a visionary approach to strengthening the medical community. She will formally assume charge as President in November 2026. Dr Giri had earlier worked as President of Nagpur city branch of IMA and everybody appreciated her for her contribution. Dr Giri said: “I have no words as I am overwhelmed by the trust shown by the members.
This is not just my win – it is the victory of every IMA member who believes in unity, strength, and the dignity of our profession. I express my deepest gratitude to all members across Maharashtra who trusted me, to my family and friends who stood by me, and to my colleagues who worked tirelessly for this success. Together, we will take IMA Maharashtra to new heights.” Dr Giri’s election is being hailed as a progressive step towards empowering women in leadership roles within the medical fraternity.
It stands as a beacon of inspiration for young doctors, especially women, proving that with dedication, hard work, and integrity, victory can be earned. For the last one and a half months, both the candidates campaigned with dedication.

Dr Nikhade rightly pointed out that he met several people during this campaign and witnessed their love and affection. IMA Maharashtra congratulated Dr Giri on this historic achievement and looks forward to her dynamic leadership, which promises inclusively, progressive reforms, and a stronger collective voice for doctors across the state, said a senior IMA member from Mumbai.
