Bosch GS’Tech support enables the first secure & sustainable Elephant Care Facility

The Karnataka Forest Department, in partnership with the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC) and Bosch Global Software Technologies (BGSW), has opened the first Elephant Care Facility in the state. The facility is located in Lakshmisagara, Kolar District and is surrounded by over 100 acres of reserve forest. It has been established in response to the growing number of elephants in private ownership, which are being exploited in captivity. There are over 180 captive elephants in Karnataka alone, many of whom are subjected to abuse and neglect in private custody. The new facility will provide the rescued elephants with a safe and healthy environment.
They will have access to nutritious food, adequate water, as well as a space to walk and socialize. Trained professionals will also provide regular medical care to the elephants. V Yedukondalu, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Kolar, Karnataka Forest Department, said, “The Elephant Care Facility is a historic moment for Karnataka, highlighting the need to address the challenges faced by captive elephants, many of whom have endured hardship and neglect. Our cultural and natural heritage includes these majestic beings, who deserve care, respect, and freedom.
This facility is not just a refuge but a commitment to ensuring that every rescued and needy elephant in our state has a chance to thrive in an environment that mirrors their natural habitat as much as possible, providing them with a healthy and natural diet, socialising opportunities, and the chance to indulge in other natural behaviours which aren’t possible in captivity. We are proud to collaborate with WRRC and BGSW in setting a benchmark for ethical wildlife conservation.” The facility is managed by the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC), a Bengaluru-based non-profit organization. WRRC has a team of experienced veterinarians and mahouts who are dedicated to providing the elephants with the best possible care. Suparna Baksi Ganguly, Honorable President and Co-founder, WRRC, “Elephants, as majestic and gentle creatures, deserve the utmost dignity and respect. This facility is a testament to our unwavering commitment to their welfare
We are deeply grateful to our partners, Bosch Global Software Technologies and the Karnataka Forest Department, for their dedicated support in making this safe haven a reality. Together, our efforts have set a new precedent for ethical wildlife conservation across the nation.” Bosch Global Software Technologies is an instrumental partner, enriching the essential foundation by securing the facility through setting up a CCTV surveillance network (2 areas under CCTV surveillance) and fencing enclosures (3000 square ft), an elephant weigh bridge with 10-tonne capacity to understand progress on health parameters, an off-grid solar-powered system to ensure energy self-sufficiency (Hybrid solar Inverter 5KW, 500L capacity solar water heater and 36W solar lights), two container cabins converted into a research and welfare hub to enable wildlife observation and studies, with residential capability, and a training and sensitization hub to promote awareness and capacity building of relevant stakeholders

A pivotal opportunity for world leaders to agree on stronger commitments to save lives

The United Nations General Assembly will convene a High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) for the second time during its 79th session in New York on 26th September 2024. The theme of the meeting is “Investing in the present and securing our future together: Accelerating multi-sectoral global, regional and national actions to address Antimicrobial Resistance.”
AMR is a significant threat for global health and development, with an estimated 1.3 million deaths directly attributable to AMR in 2019 and nearly 5 million deaths associated with AMR. It is undermining a century of progress in medicine, as infections that were previously treatable and curable with drugs are becoming (or at risk of becoming) incurable. It is aggravated by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in humans, animals, and the environment.
The cost of AMR to the economy is significant. In addition to death and disability, prolonged illness results in longer hospital stays, more expensive medicines and financial difficulties for patients. If left unchecked it is projected to cause a GDP shortfall of at least USD 3.4 trillion annually and push 24 million more people into extreme poverty (World Bank, 2017).
The 2016 political declaration of the first High-level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on AMR was a milestone in the global commitment for greater urgency and action in addressing AMR using a One Health approach.
The upcoming 2024 High-Level Meeting at the UN General Assembly is a pivotal opportunity for world leaders to agree on stronger commitments to save lives; protect countries from the growing impacts of AMR on human health, agrifood system, animals, plants, and the environment; and ensure that effective antimicrobials are available and affordable when needed for current and future generations.

Manipal Hospital Ghaziabad becomes first in the city to perform REZUM

A minimally invasive procedure using water vapour (steam) helps to reduce prostate size and offer relief to a patient in Ghaziabad
Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad, made a landmark achievement by successfully performing REZUM, a minimally invasive water vapour (steam) therapy used to treat prostate enlargement, on a 53-year-old male patient. This marks the first time that the procedure has been conducted in Ghaziabad, representing a significant advancement in urological care. The procedure was performed by Dr. Sanjay Garg, Senior Consultant – Urology and Andrology, and Dr. Ashish Tyagi, Consultant – Urology, along with their team.
The patient had been experiencing poor flow of urine for the past 2 years and had noticed 2-3 episodes of complete urine blockage, during which a pipe had to be used to release the urine. This was due to prostate (a small gland that makes fluid which mixes with sperm to form semen) enlargement, which caused blockage in passing urine. Despite being on medication, the patient experienced side effects and did not see much improvement. Therefore, REZUM, a minimally invasive treatment that uses high-temperature water vapor (steam) to shrink the extra prostate tissue that is causing problems like frequent or difficult urination, was recommended. The whole procedure takes less time and helps men avoid long-term medications or major surgery and preserves sexual (ejaculatory) function.
Dr Sanjay Garg, Senior Consultant – Urology and Andrology, Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad, said, “Prostate issues are a common problem in middle-aged and older men. In India, the prevalence of enlarged prostate is more than 50% in men by the age of 60 years. In this case, the patient had severe difficulty in passing urine, a main cause of prostate enlargement, and hence, this water therapy was recommended. This technology offered a minimally invasive, day-care solution to the patient and significantly reduced recovery time while preserving sexual function and overall quality of his life.”
Dr Ashish Tyagi, Consultant – Urology, Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad, said, “It is one of the latest advancements in the options for treating prostate issues. Performing REZUM at Manipal Hospital Ghaziabad is a proud milestone towards patient-centred, low-risk prostate care. This is a simple yet effective therapy that allows you to return to your normal activities sooner. The therapy was a success, which allowed the patient to comfortably pass urine and has resumed his daily activities with no complications.”
