Dr. Mani Deepthi, Apollo Hospitals, Seshadripuram, Bangalore for World Diabetes Day
“The first 10 years of diabetes is considered as the golden period. If the glycemic control is good in the first 10 years, the beneficial effects will be maintained in later course of diabetes.
This is called “Metabolic Memory”. On World Diabetes Day I would like to reiterate the point that India is often referred to as the diabetes capital of the world, as it accounts for 17% of the total number of Diabetes Mellitus patients in the world. In India, on an average 77 million people above the age of 18 years are suffering from Diabetes Mellitus.
Diabetes displays an iceberg phenomenon that is more than 50% of people are unaware of their diabetic status which leads to health complications if not detected and treated early.”
